Origins: The image displayed above is a real photograph of a 10-month-old Egyptian girl named Manar Maged. Manar's development in the womb had affected by a condition in which an embryo starts to split but stops before the process is complete, resulting in the formation of a less-than-fully-developed conjoined twin. Often the second twin forms as an extra limb or trunk, but in this rare case it formed as a second head. (News accounts reported doctors as saying that Manar's second head was "capable of smiling and blinking but not independent life.")

On 19 February 2005, Manar underwent a 13-hour operation performed by a 13-member surgical team to remove her conjoined twin. For now, Manar remains in intensive care, in what news reports describe as "serious but improving condition."
