Mexican panda fails in mating mission

TOKYO — A panda Shuan Shuan, loaned to Japan from Mexico last year on a mission to mate, has again failed to get pregnant from a second artificial insemination. After failing to take a liking to 19-year-old Ling Ling, Ueno zoo's only giant panda, 17-year-old Shuan Shuan was inseminated in February and July.

"They don't get along. Just putting them in the same room does not lead to natural mating," Kazuhiro Sakamoto, a senior breeder, told reporters. Ueno zookeepers are eager to inseminate Shuan Shuan again in the spring when female pandas are usually in heat. (Wire reports)
