BBC NEWS | Technology | Poison porn pics show up online

Otra razón para cambiarse a firefox, y ultimadamente a Linux o Mac OS X...

The first images crafted to contain a malicious program that can take control of a PC have been found on the net.

Security experts have been expecting such images to turn up after Microsoft revealed a weakness in the way Windows handles the popular Jpeg format.

Soon after this discovery, a program started circulating online that was written to exploit this bug.

The poisoned images were posted to a porn newsgroup at the weekend and were found by Usenet provider Easynews.

Early warning

Poisoned pictures containing the bug have been widely predicted following the discovery of the Jpeg bug that afflicts more than a dozen Microsoft programs.

To fall victim to the poisoned pictures, users must view it using Windows Explorer.

ah claro, todo empieza con pornografia...

Toutatis

Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Toutatis, a mountain-sized asteroid, came the closest to the Earth since at least the 12th century, allowing scientists to gather data about its trajectory and features, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration said.

Toutatis, shaped like a yam, and 4.6 kilometers (2.9 miles) long, passed 1.5 million kilometers from the Earth at about 1:35 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time, D.C. Agle, a spokesman for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said in a phone interview. Scientists used the Arecibo radio telescope dish in Puerto Rico to gather data on the asteroid, he said.

MAVROMATIC - A Wingless 727 Limo?

Keeping with things that fly, Vaca Meter Limousines has converted an old Boeing 727-100 and converted it into a 50-seat luxury limousine. For about $300 an hour, Limousines de Guadalajar Vaca Meters will fly, uh transport you and your closest 49 friends around Mexico. It’s powered by a six-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine in the back and has air brakes and suspension. The bird is about 54’ long and 12’ wide. Truck-style wheels and suspension replace the landing gear and on the inside, passengers are treated to neon strobes, a dance floor, a bar and a romantic space in the back to _________. (fill in the blank).

It’s amazing what three months and sixty people can accomplish… well, now the world finally has one… a “Wingless 727 Limo”

Japan Today - News - Crime manual found in ex-yakuza's office in Osaka - Japan's Leading International News Network

Gangsters con manuales??

OSAKA — A special manual offering tips on how to carry out various crimes has been found in a former crime syndicate office in the heart of Osaka, police said Sunday. The 206-page book, entitled "Special Top Secret Information," covers more than 100 items related to how to successfully commit crimes, the police said.

The police were informed of the book by a company that was cleaning up the office in Osaka's Kita Ward after the group moved out, they said. The book instructs readers to bend their motorbike license plates if they use motorbikes for crimes, and said easy targets on the street are housewives coming back from their shopping, according to the police

TOKYO — A man in his 40s from Saitama Prefecture fell into a coma after being bit on the finger by his pet hamster in February and subsequently died, his doctor said Monday. The man, who was asthmatic, fell into anaphylactic shock, — a life-threatening allergic reaction — after being bitten.

He bred hamsters over the past several years and was bitten several time, the doctor said. He is believed to be the first person in Japan to die from a hamster bite

How much bigger?

Resolution upgrades and if they make sense:

  • Two to Three megapixels - 1,225,728 more pixels - 64% increase (Average)
  • Two to Four megapixels - 1,951,488 more pixels - 102% increase (Good)
  • Two to Five megapixels - 3,118,848 more pixels - 162% increase (Very good)
  • Three to Four megapixels - 725,760 more pixels - 23% increase (Not worth it)
  • Three to Five megapixels - 1,893,120 more pixels - 60% increase (Average)
  • Four to Five megapixels - 1,167,360 more pixels - 30% increase (Not worth it)

Thus if all you're interested in is increasing resolution (not necessarily for features or other image quality improvements) you must first analyze just how much more resolution you're going to get. From the quick calculations above you can see that four megapixel digital camera owners should wait for the next big leap (seven / eight megapixels).

Eyetrack III - What You Most Need to Know

News websites have been with us for about a decade, and editors and designers still struggle with many unanswered questions: Is homepage layout effective? ... What effect do blurbs on the homepage have compared to headlines? ... When is multimedia appropriate? ... Are ads placed where they will be seen by the audience?

The Eyetrack III research released by The Poynter Institute, the Estlow Center for Journalism & New Media, and Eyetools could help answer those questions and more. Eyetracking research like this won't provide THE answer to those questions. But combined with other site metrics already used by news website managers -- usability testing, focus groups, log analysis -- the Eyetrack III findings could provide some direction for improving news websites.

In Eyetrack III, we observed 46 people for one hour as their eyes followed mock news websites and real multimedia content. In this article we'll provide an overview of what we observed. You can dive into detailed Eyetrack III findings and observations on this website -- use the navigation at the top and left of this page

Comparison of life in Piscataway, New Jersey, Kochi, Japan, and Zhuzhou, China

ejemplo:
Status

Piscataway, New Jersey: Small town near NYC in a dense suburban area
Kochi, Japan: Capital of a rural prefecture
Zhuzhou, China: Industrial city & train hub

Taking 30 people out for dinner and getting them drunk in a nice restaurant

Piscataway, New Jersey: 1200$ + tip
Kochi, Japan: 1200$
Zhuzhou, China: 100$

Ridiculous foreign policy stance

Piscataway, New Jersey: That cuba is bad. That israel deserves unconditional support. That the war in Iraq was justified. That the US promotes democracy all over the world.

Kochi, Japan: That japan wasn't as bad as nazi germany in ww2. That the rape of Nanking didn't happen. That they were victims of ww2. That dropping the bomb was worse than starting ww2.

Zhuzhou, China: That taiwan is part of china.

This was shot in the rightmost window of this shot, and it’s about my 30th attempt to get this one right. Anyway, I’m reasonably happy with this one, and unless I find a better way of resizing (rather than using Web Presenter Pro) I don’t think I’ll be able to do much better.

Fuji gives photographers the two-finger salute | The Register

We gather that there are companies who specialise in making sure that proposed global brands do not offend local sensibilities. For instance, if you're thinking of launching a international network of Wi-Fi hotspots and calling it "Cabrones", these boys will tell you that you'll certainly have to rethink for the Spanish-speaking market.
It seems, however, that there is no-one providing a similar service for hand gestures. Or if there is, then Fuji has yet to touch base. The proof comes in this rather rude pic for an experimental "glove camera", recently spotted on i4u. All we know is that "the future is bright. Fuji is working on a digital camera glove concept. With moving the fingers the shutter is triggered. the lens is worn like a ring" - all of which would be just a rather silly idea were it not for the fact that the lovely photographer is telling we Brits to, ahem, "take a running jump".

Those not familiar with this very British gesture can rest assured that it is favoured for deployment from car windows during moments of road rage and usually results in a good old punch-up, if not a fatal stabbing. The story goes that English longbowmen were so effective at decimating ranks of horse-borne French knights that the latter would cut off the two forefingers of any captured archer to prevent him pulling the bow. Accordingly, lines of obstreperous Brits would face their adversaries giving them the two fingers as if to say "I've got my full complement - so you're going to get some", or words to that effect.

Article: Cannabis extract shrinks brain tumours| New Scientist

Cannabis extracts may shrink brain tumours and other cancers by blocking the growth of the blood vessels which feed them, suggests a new study.

An active component of the street drug has previously been shown to improve brain tumours in rats. But now Manuel Guzmán at Complutense University, Spain, and colleagues have demonstrated how the cannabis extracts block a key chemical needed for tumours to sprout blood vessels – a process called angiogenesis.

hurts.

Some elderly patients who suffered from Itai Itai disease--a type of cadmium poisoning recognized as the first disease in the nation to be caused by pollution--have been officially recognized posthumously as victims of the disease.

Thirty-six years have passed since the disease, which is characterized by extreme pain, from which its name is derived, was determined to be caused by pollution in a basin of the Jinzugawa river in Toyama Prefecture. Why did the Toyoma prefectural government not recognize the patients as victims of the disease until after they had died?

Yahoo! News - Three Killed in Rush for IKEA Vouchers in Saudi

Three men were trampled to death in a rush to claim vouchers at the first IKEA furniture showroom in Saudi Arabia Wednesday, hospital officials said.

Sixteen shoppers were injured at the Sweden-based furniture store opening in Jeddah. Medics revived some 20 customers who had fainted in the crush. IKEA said two were killed.

The rush was triggered by an offer for the first 50 shoppers to receive $150 in vouchers. An IKEA statement said more than 20,000 people showed up.

Hospital officials said two of the dead were a Pakistani and a Saudi national.

The IKEA statement said the company had worked closely with Saudi security officials to plan the opening.

IKEA is known for simple, reasonably priced products.

Vacas lesbianas???

hot on the heels of the British revelations that sheep like happy, smiley people and pine for absent friends comes the earth-shattering possibility that cows' propensity to indulge in a bit of girl-on-girl is caused by a combination of "stress, [and] a selective domestication process which favoured outwardly sexual cows and the number of animals on heat in a small enclosure"

Lifestyles of the rich and famous

Who could be better placed to design a foldaway director’s chair than a Hollywood actor who is used to spending hours sitting in one, waiting for his close-up? If you follow this line of thinking, you might as well have a musician designing CD racks, a footwear designer creating the perfect shoe horn and while you’re at it, why not ask a jewellery designer to draw up the plans for a velvet-lined safe? If you’re Tom Dixon, creative director of Habitat, such a notion makes perfect sense. But if Dixon’s regular team of product designers are getting worried about being made redundant, they can rest easy. Next month, Habitat launches its first ever limited edition VIP collection. These Very Important Products have been designed by a list of famous names in celebration of Habitat’s 40th year in business.
